Response to "Big Foot, Scoop Jackson Democrats and Other Myths"

This week's column (August 9, 2006) is basically a demonization of anyone that disagrees with Coulter. Which means it's basically the same as last week's. And the week before's. You get where this is going.

Democrats are … so blinded by their hatred for President Bush that they cannot see their way to supporting any aspect of the war on terrorism.

Then she contradicts herself, saying:

…Democrats don't oppose the war on terrorism because they hate Bush: They hate Bush because he is fighting the war on terrorism.

On one hand, she says Democrats oppose the war on terror because they are blinded by their hatred of Bush, but immediately turns around and says Democrats oppose Bush because he is fighting the war on terror. Which is it?

She then turns her eye to Ned Lamont, first criticizing him because of his grandfather's political views, then saying:

His goal is to unite the "cut" and "run" wings of his party into one glorious coalition.

"Cut" and "run"? This line is getting quite tiring. It is the standard accusation any conservative makes if someone suggests that being in at war in Iraq for the indefinite future — and possibly perpetually — might not be in America's best interest. It's the same phrase, word-for-word, heard from the White House, FOX News, and Rush Limbaugh. Frankly, it's quite unoriginal.

The last quarter of this week's column is spent discussing a 2004 Rasmussen poll (probably this one) where Americans were asked if the country was "fair and decent." She lauds Republicans for agreeing 83% (the Rasmussen page says 70%), but criticizes Democrats:

…Democrats were nearly split, with only 46 percent agreeing that America is generally a fair and decent country

What she doesn't say is that this Rasmussen poll appears to have been asking if people think there is racism and discrimination in the country, not whether America is a "good" country. That's what it meant by "fair and decent."

What's truly ironic is that, earlier in this very same column, she said of Maxine Waters, Representative from California and an African-American woman:

…without [affirmative action] she would not have a job that didn't involve wearing a paper hat.

The irony is left as an exercise to the reader.
